The Welsh Government has announced that the 2013/14 application window for the Young Entrants Support Scheme (YESS) is now open. YESS aims to encourage and support new entrants to farming in Wales.

The assistance package includes the following key elements:

  • A one-off direct aid grant up to a maximum of £15,000.
  • Access to a dedicated Young Entrants' Business Enabler service.
  • Access to funded mentoring services from established farmers.

The maximum amount of grant aid available will be 50% of an agreed £30,000 investment, ie a £15,000 maximum grant. There will also be a 100% subsidised access to a mentoring service by established farmers. The maximum funded subsidy will amount to four days' subsidised mentoring service within a 12-month period.

The grant can be used towards capital or revenue investment for expenses incurred when young entrants are setting-up as head of holding for the first time.

To be eligible for aid under this scheme, the applicant must be under 40 years of age at the time he/she makes an application for the aid (and as confirmed by a birth certificate), and be setting-up for the first time as head of holding.

The report, Birth of a charity: Governance of organisations seeking registered charitable status provides an insight into the experiences and perceptions of those applying to register as a charity, and their work with trustees. The online survey ran from August 2011 to August 2012, a period during which over 6,000 new register applications were submitted. 667 applicants completed the questionnaire.

The meeting will consider what needs to be done to develop stronger disabled people’s networks and organisations which can help deliver the Welsh Government’s vision for creating an enabling society in which Independent Living is a practical reality.

The agenda responds to two of the key questions in the Framework consultation paper:

-      What are the best and most practicable ways of supporting the growth and effectiveness of Disabled People’s Organisations across Wales?

-      What can be done to promote the establishment of more Centres for Independent Living across Wales?

The UK Government’s Disabled People’s User Led Organisations (DPULO) Ambassador for Wales will also provide an outline of the programme and her role.
