Poverty and welfare reform: exploring the impact on homelessness and housing-related support

The day will consist of plenaries and workshops on a range of topics relevant to poverty in Wales and the impact of welfare reform, including how this relates to people who use and deliver homelessness and housing-related support services.Topics include:

  • poverty in Wales;
  • welfare sanctions;
  • devolution of Universal Credit powers;
  • socio-economic disadvantage and suicidal behaviour;
  • young people and welfare reform;
  • devolution of housing costs in short-term supported accommodation;
  • social security for vulnerable people, and
  • the Valleys taskforce.

We will hear from senior representatives from academia, government, housing associations and charities about addressing poverty and its effects. Speakers include (with others to be confirmed):

  • Helen Barnard – Head of Analysis, Joseph Rowntree Foundation;
  • Alan Budge – Associate,  Participatory Budgeting Partners;
  • Katie Dalton – Director, Cymorth Cymru;
  • Linda Davis – Head of Welfare Reform & DWP Relations, Welsh Government;
  • Professor Sarah Johnsen – Professorial Fellow, Institute for Social Policy, Housing and Equalities Research ;
  • Maureen Howells – Deputy Director, Tackling Poverty, Welsh Government Jules Oldham – Head of Policy & Operations, Homeless Action Scotland.

This is an all-day event, with lunch and refreshments provided. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, share thoughts and network.
