Mental Capacity Act

This Cardiff Council workshop is for care managers, care providers and social workers.

Aim

The aim of this workshop based session is to set out the requirements of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 in adult social care.

The workshop will use case studies from social care to illustrate how the 2005 Act applies in practice.

Objectives

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to;

  • Explain the practical implications of the statutory principles to the Mental capacity Act 2005
  • Describe the role of the Mental Capacity Act code of practice when making decisions for people who lack capacity
  • Outline why decision making ability is based on mental capacity
  • Appraise the mental capacity assessment process
  • Categorize designated decision makers under the mental capacity Act 2005
  • Reflect on the components of the statutory checklist for determining a best interest
  • Explain the purpose of the balance sheet approach in determining a best interests
  • Recall the role of an independent mental capacity advocate

Facilitator: Richard Griffith, Senior Lecturer in Health and Social Care Law at Swansea University
