We aim to capture and share the contributions of people of African descent from the diaspora as part of our shared history, through a wide range of educational and creative activity for people of all ages.

Race Council Cymru as the ethnic minority established national lead body for race in Wales manages Black History Wales-wide work. The Black History Wales network is made up of over 117 Pan-Wales organisations such as; youth charities, grassroots groups, schools, Further Education and Higher Education institutions representing people of different cultures, faiths and geographical locations who sit on our steering committee. These include Amgueddfa Cymru/ Museums Wales; African Community Centre – Wales; Aberystwyth, Cardiff, Cardiff MET, Swansea, UWTSD, and Bangor Universities; Schools; The Cardiff Third Sector Council; South Wales Jamaican Society; Wales Millennium Centre, Barnardos Cymru, National Assembly for Wales, Admiral, Unison Black Members to name a few.

To celebrate BHMW 2019, the theme for the year is “Movers. Shakers and Legacy Makers: 12th Anniversary 2019’’ (Hashtag #BHMWales2019)

The Black History Wales Youth Awards provides a platform to recognise and celebrate the achievements of young people of African descent in Wales. Last year, the awards ceremony was held at the Pierhead Building, Cardiff Bay. Led by Race Council Cymru, the awards ceremony was a huge success, with awards presented by the Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Local Government Professor Mark Drakeford AM. The ceremony and winners received nationwide coverage and prime time spots on BBC News and ITV’s Newsweek. This year, we aim even higher and we want you to be part of it – so please nominate a deserving young person of African and ethnic minority descent.
