National Union of Students (NUS) Lead campaign to end Period Poverty for girls and women in education!

The National Union of Students have called for the Welsh Government to increase action to end period poverty as a priority.  While they welcomed the £1 million made available by Welsh Government during 2018-20 for women and girls in the most deprived communities, the NUS Wales Women’s Officer Chisiomo Phiri is concerned with women and girls in education.

Chisiomo references research conducted by Plan International UK which found that

  • 1 in 10 girls in the UK have struggled to afford sanitary products
  • 1 in 15 have been completely unable to afford sanitary products at one time or another
  • 49% of girls in the UK have missed an entire day of school because of period poverty

NUS have produced a toolkit which provides useful guidance and downloadable tips for learning practitioners and employers which is now available. Unite the Union is also campaigning to end period poverty in construction and calling for employers to provide free sanitary products at their workplaces.
