Migraine Insight – Helping you take control

28th March 2015

Migraine Action, the national advisory and support charity for adults and children affected by migraine, is coming to Cardiff to host an event for those with the condition and to help their friends and family learn more.

The day aims to give practical tips for proactively managing migraine, with topics covered including headache and migraine diagnosis, treatment, prevention, latest research and medication overuse. There will also be the opportunity for people to discuss their own migraine in a friendly and informal atmosphere and to ask questions of the leading migraine experts speaking on the day:

  • Dr Andrew Dowson, Kings College Hospital, London
  • Dr Peter Brookes, University of Wales, Cardiff
  • Dr Mohamed Hassan, Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil

Did you know:-

  • 1 in 7 people in the UK suffer from migraine.  Migraine affects twice as many women as men.
    • Migraine affects people from all age groups (even young children) and all social classes.
    • The World Health Organisation has classified headache as a major health disorder and has rated migraine amongst the top 20 most disabling lifetime conditions.

Migraine is the most common neurological condition; two thirds of sufferers are women, and all migraineurs are more likely to experience migraine between the ages of 20-50 years. A migraine attack can last from 4 to 72 hours, with most migraineurs keeping well between attacks. Migraine is more than just a headache. Other symptoms can include: visual disturbances (flashing lights, blind spots in the vision, zig zag patterns etc.), nausea and vomiting, sensitivity to light (photophobia), sensitivity to noise (phonophobia), sensitivity to smells (osmophobia) and tingling / pins and needles / weakness / numbness in the limbs. Around 60% of sufferers never consult their GP because they mistakenly think that nothing can be done to help them. There is a wide range of effective treatments now available including new products introduced during the past year.

Booking Essential: £7 members, £12 non members
(£5 members, £10 non members for bookings made before 7th March 2015)
