  • PDF

The Welsh Government has announced that the 2013/14 application window for the Young Entrants Support Scheme (YESS) is now open. YESS aims to encourage and support new entrants to farming in Wales.

The assistance package includes the following key elements:

  • A one-off direct aid grant up to a maximum of £15,000.
  • Access to a dedicated Young Entrants' Business Enabler service.
  • Access to funded mentoring services from established farmers.

The maximum amount of grant aid available will be 50% of an agreed £30,000 investment, ie a £15,000 maximum grant. There will also be a 100% subsidised access to a mentoring service by established farmers. The maximum funded subsidy will amount to four days' subsidised mentoring service within a 12-month period.

The grant can be used towards capital or revenue investment for expenses incurred when young entrants are setting-up as head of holding for the first time.

To be eligible for aid under this scheme, the applicant must be under 40 years of age at the time he/she makes an application for the aid (and as confirmed by a birth certificate), and be setting-up for the first time as head of holding.

Applications for support during 2013/14 must be submitted by 7 December 2012.

People are welcome at The Wallich, Streets Ahead Project at the Learning Centre, 3 Pendyris Street, Cardiff CF11 6RJ.

This friendly, locally based project can help people build their confidence for work, life, volunteering and further study and training.

Sessions include:

  • E-Learning
  • Confidence building
  • CV writing
  • Mock interviews

Recruit more widely for trustees, regulator encourages would-be charities

  • PDF

Survey research by the Charity Commission, the independent regulator of charities in England and Wales, has revealed that charity register applicants tend to rely on informal networks to recruit much-needed trustees and develop their organisations. The report, Birth of a charity: Governance of organisations seeking registered charitable status provides an insight into the experiences and perceptions of those applying to register as a charity, and their work with trustees. The online survey ran from August 2011 to August 2012, a period during which over 6,000 new register applications were submitted. 667 applicants completed the questionnaire.
